Max & Mason - Young Autistic Brothers, Living in Seattle

A record for over 10 years starting 2005

6. Going to the Washington State University Autism Research Center

2005年

2005

6 months after the application was sent to the Washington State University Autism Center in Seattle, finally, it was our turn.

The most advanced autism research center is available for us.

So excited with high expectation.

We saw a cute boy, around 6-7 years old, waiting for his turn with his grandma in the waiting room.
"Hi!" We greeted each other, smiling.

He does not look autistic at all.  An ordinary looking child.

His grandma said he had not been able to talk at all. . .

We had to have high hope. . .

An interview starts.

Shock!

We were told that the therapy was for 3 months only.  We have waited for 6 months.

What could be done in 3 months? . . .

The most advanced professionals of the field, we expected so, look the same as therapists coming to our home.  They are all young therapists in their 20th.

But they must be the excellent experts in autism therapy. . .

Once-a-month therapy has started aiming for 3 goals in 3 months.
They are:
(1) To eat with a fork and a spoon

(2) To drink with a cup (not the one for a baby)

(3) To challenge new food (Max's diet was extremely unbalanced.)

We were expecting a therapy something totally different and advanced, so it was a little dissapointing. . .

No change from the therapy they had been having at home. . .

It is only 3 months, you cannot expect a big change.

Our expectation was too much.
The therapy had finished without achieving any of the 3 goals after all.
Max was still drinking from a sippy cup and could not handle a fork and spoon.

Max eats only crackers and that sort of food so he does not need to use a fork, rather than he cannot use a fork.

Max' younger brother Mason was 9 months but made a reservation at UW for 2-year-old autism diagnosis.

Max' schedule is very hard - filled with lessons for a whole week.
Daily 2-hour therapy at home or somewhere else. . .
Mommy is always tired in mind and body.

When Max is having a therapy, she always tries to listen from the outside of the room.
She is in charge of preparing teaching materials attracting to Max.
When Max receives a therapy happily for 2 hours, she is relieved but it seldom happens.
We hear him crying once or twice during 2-hour therapy from the room.

「Do this!」
We well understand that. . . he is only 3 and kept in a room as long as 2 hours and asked; "Do this! Do that!" . . .
Actually, it is great that he goes into the room straight . . .
