29 Very Severe Teacher, Ms. Laurie - 2011

マックス９歳メイソン７歳になった。

Max is 9 and Mason 7.

今日も楽しそうに迎えのスクールバスを待つ二人。
They happily wait for the school bus to come as usual.
アメリカ映画によく出てくるあの黄色いちょっと古めかしいバスが
ガタゴト二人を迎えにやってきた.

「Good Morning! Max. Good Morning! Mason」

運転手さんはかなり年配の太っちょのおばさんだ。
The yellow old-fashioned bus that I know in the American movies comes to pick them up.

"Good monring, Max!  Good morning, Mason!"

A driver is a fatty elderly woman.

バスの中には特別学級に通う子供が４〜５人乗っている。
4-5 children are in the bus who are going to the Special Class.
メイソンは必ずバスの中で一番身体が不自由で動けない女の子の隣に座り
その子の靴が脱げると履かせてあげたりいろいろお世話をしながら
乗っているらしい。
Mason always sits next to the girl who is the most physically hadicapped in the bus and  takes care of her, helping her to wear shoes when they come off, etc., on the way to school. 
学校は家から５分位の所にあるが３０分位かけて子供達を順番に迎えに行く。
The school is about only 5 minutes drive from our home but takes about 30 minutes driving around house to house to pick up children .
小学校は遠くにはカスケイド山脈を臨み新しい校舎と
広々とした校庭があり素晴らしい環境にある。

The school is located in wonderful surroundings. You can see Cascade Mountains far away, the building is new and has a large school yard.

そこは普通の小学校であり障害者クラスがひとクラスだけある。
It is a regular primary school and there is one class for handicapped children. 
身体の不自由な子やダウン症の子供などいろいろな障害を抱えている
子供が12、3人通っている。どういう訳か自閉症の子供は
マックスとメイソンだけだ。

About 12 children are attending the class.  Handicaps they have are various.  Some of them are physically handicapped, some have Down syndrome.  Only Max and Mason happens to be autistic. 

近所にも何人か自閉症の子供がいるが車で15分位のところにある
古い街の小学校に通っている。

A few autistic children live in the neighborhood but they are going to the different school, old primary school in the town located in 15 minute drive.

障害者クラス担当はローリー先生一人であり卒業まで替らない。
Ms. Laurie is the only teacher for the Special Class and the teacher will not change until graduation.
このローリー先生はアメリカ人にしては全く化粧もせずオシャレもせず
笑顔もなくひと目見てなんだか嫌な予感・・・
Ms Laurie does not pay much attention to fashion, no make-up at all, which is rare for American woman, and she does not smile . . . our first impression was not good . . .
残念ながらその予感が的中してしまう。
Our foreboding, unfortunately, came true. 
障害者クラスを受け持つ位だから心優しい先生なのだろうが
学校が始まるとすぐに「あれっ　何だろう？」と？

As a person who is in charge of handicapped children's class, she must be a gentle person,

but when the school started, we experienced occassions . . . "we do not quite understand why . . .?" 

アメリカでは学費は無料だが学年のはじめに学校から新学年に必要な
学用品（ファイル、ノート、鉛筆類、　クレヨン、消しゴム、のりなど）や
日用品（ティッシュボックス、スナック菓子）などのリストがメールで届く。
Tuition is free in U.S. but we receive by e-mail a list of stuff we need to prepare for a new school term.  School supplies such as files, notebooks, pencils, crayons, erasers, glue

and daily necessities such as tissue boxes, snacks, etc.
新学期が始まるまでにそれぞれが学校に届けにいく。
Parent delivers them to school before the school starts.
8月の中旬になると生活雑貨文具のコーナーはお母さんと一緒に
リスト片手に学用品を買う子供達であふれている。
School supplies corder at store is crowded, in mid August, with children with mothers who are busy shopping with a shopping list at hands.
ローリー先生は厳しいので中身は変わらずともローリー先生指定のブランドでないと
メールがきて買い直しをさせられる。

Ms. Laurie is severe and if goods are not the brand she informed, she sends an e-mail to ask to buy the exact ones. 

学年はじめには教室の入り口の壁一面にその年のテーマに添った生徒の
大きな顔写真が貼られクラス全員の顔がわかるようになっている。
At the beginning of the term, big photos of chilren's face are pinned on the wall so that we know who is who. The photo should made based on the theme of the year. 
それらは各自が作って年度初めに持っていく。
We prepare it at home and take it to school on the first day.
結構な仕事になり毎年我が家のダディは張り切って作っている。
It is a time-consuming work but our daddy enjoys making it every year.
一昨年は海がテーマだったのでメイソンはサーファーになった。

アロハシャツを着てカッコイイ サーファーだ。
The year before last, the theme was sea, so Mason became a surfer.
The cool looking surfer with aloha shirt on.
昨年は農場がテーマだったのでメイソンはヒヨコになった。
Mason was a chick as the theme was a farm last year.
ダディが黄色い羽根をたくさんつけてメイソン顔の
可愛いひよこを作ってくれた。
Daddy made a cute chick looks like Mason, putting a lot of yellow feathers 
よろこんで学校へ持っていったらなんとその日に持って帰ってきた。
「What's wrong ? 」

農場にはヒヨコもいるよ！

Mason was so happy and took it to school but, to our surprise, he brought it back home on the same day.  "What's wrong?"

There are chicks in a farm!　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　
　　　　　　　　
ローリー先生からのメールにはテーマは農場なので農夫を作って下さい」とのこと！
Ms Laurie's e-mail said "please make a farmer as the theme is a farm" !
そこでまたダディはチェックのシャツとジーンズのつなぎを着た
農夫を頑張って作ってくれた。

Well, daddy made again the farmer Mason with check-pattern shirt and jeans overall on.

全長50〜60cm位あるから結構な作業になるがローリー先生には関係無いらしい…
It is quite large - 50cm x 60cm.  It's a lot of work.  But Ms. Laurie does not care, I guess . . .
残念ながらダディの傑作ひよこさんの写真をとらなかった。　　
I am sorry we did not take a picture of chick - daddy's masterpiece. 

障害者クラスの子供達はいろいろなレベルの障害の子供がおり
レベルによりそれぞれ教科ごとに教室を移動する。
Children in the Special Class have all levels of disorders.
They go to different classrooms by level and by subject.
マックスは障害者クラスで勉強していることがほとんどだ。
Max stays and studies at the Special Class most of the time.
メイソンはコミュニケーション能力に問題があるが能力的には
かなり普通の子供に近いのでリソース ルームというところで勉強することが多い。
Mason, though he has communication problem, has intelligence closer to children of ordinary class.  So often studies at Resource Room.
リソースルームで勉強する子供たちはメイソンのような子供や
普通の子供でも少し勉強に問題のある子供がそこで学んでいる。
The Resource Room is for children like Mason and ordinary children who have minor problems to study. 
マックスは音楽やコンピュータは普通のクラスの子供たちと一緒に楽しんでいる。

メイソンは算数も普通クラスで学んでいる。
Max studies music and computer with children from the ordinary class.
Mason studies mathematics at ordinary class.
マミー、ダディとしてはメイソンは出来るだけ多くの教科を普通のクラスで
学ばせたいと望んでいるが、それがなかなか難しい。
Mason's daddy and mommy hope Mason can study in ordinary class as many subjects as possible.  But it is not so easy.
メイソンはコミュニケーション能力に問題があるため先生の話を全て
すぐに理解するのが難しい。

理解させるのにはコツが必要なのだ。
It is difficult for Mason to thoroughly understand teachers. 

You need to have certain skills to make him understand.

慣れているABAセラピストをしばらくの間、学校にメイソンのヘルプとして派遣したい
とローリー先生にお願いしたが却下されてしまう。

We asked Ms. Laurie to accept for a while our ABA therapist as an assistant to help Mason at class but it was refused.

今、何を勉強しているのか？
どういうところが問題か？
普通クラスの先生と連絡が取りたいとおねがいするとそれも却下。
We also asked Ms. Laurie if we can contact with teachers of regular classes so that we know what he is studying now and what problems Mason is facing.  She said no.
普通クラスの先生と連絡が取りたかったらすべてローリー先生を
通さないとだめだという。

She says all of our communications with regular class teachers should be through her.

たくさんの自閉症の子供をみているセラピストさんもローリー先生の対応には
首をかしげるばかり…
Our thepist who has long experience teaching many autistic children could not understand Ms. Laurie's attitude.
どこの学校も親がセラピストを自分の子供のヘルプとして派遣することは
とても助かると喜ばれているとのことだ。

According to our therapist, sending personal therapist to a child as an extra help is most welcomed and appreciated in any other schools.

しかもその学校でマックスとメイソンが初めての自閉症の子供であり
ローリー先生も自閉症の子供を初めて受け持ったのであれば
自閉症の子供の教え方扱い方のこつを学ぶのに良い機会だと思うのだが…　　　　
Besides, to our Special Class, Max and Mason are the first autistic chidren and

for Ms. Laurie, it is her first time to teach autistic children and it is a good chance for her to learn a skill to teach autism . . .

それでもマックスとメイソンは学校が大好きだ・・・

 Still, Max and Mason love going to school . . .
