32 Autistic Persons cannot Sense the Mood - 2010

よく「空気読めない人」とか「変わった人」とか言われる。
People often say "he cannot sense the mood" or "he is strange."
自閉症の人は、いろいろな場面で経験してきたことを自分の引き出しに入れて置き、
出会った時に似たような場面を引き出しから出して対応するらしい・・・
It seems that autistic persons put their experiences in various scenes into their drawers.
And when they face the similar scene, they take it out from the drawer and cope with it . . .
だから目に見えること、自分自身が経験したことにしか対応出来ない。
So, they can handle only with something visible and something they have once experienced.
空気を読む事なんてことは難しいし人の言葉の裏に秘める感情なんて
理解出来ないと言われている。

Thus, it is believed that it is impossible for them to sense mood and to understand feelings hidden behind words. 

自閉症である大学生のドナさんは、
ある時大家さんのドアをノックしたら大家さんの奥さんがとても怖い顔で
出てきたのでビックリしてしまった。

Donna, autistic college student, knocked the door of the landlord.  The wife of the landlord came out with fearful looking face and she was so shocked to see her.

そのままドナさんのメンターとしていろいろ相談に
乗ってくれる教授の家に駆け込んだ。
She ran into the professor's place straight.  He is her mentor and she has been consulting with him on various matters. 
「私は何も悪い事をしていないし何も悪い事は言ってないのに
何故奥さんが怒っているのかわからない」とドナさんは訴えた。
Donna claimed "I am not doing anything bad, saying nothing bad, 

I do not understand why she is so angry."
そこで教授はドナさんに
「人間にはいろいろな感情があり、別に怒っていなくとも悲しいことがあったり
辛いことがあると優しい顔が出来ず怒ったような顔になってしまうのだよ。
ドナに怒っているわけでないよ」と丁寧に説明するとやっと納得して帰った。
The professor explained to Donna.

"People have various feelings.  Even if we are not angry, we may look angry when we are sad or having a hard time."  She understood and returned home. 
これでドナの引き出しがまた一つ増えた。
Donna has another drawer with this experience.
ドナは自閉症スペクトラムのひとつである高機能性自閉症と呼ばれる自閉症だ。
Donna is high-functioning autism, one of autism spectrums. 
言葉を話す事には問題なく知的障害もないが、人の 感情を想像する事は難しい。
She has no speech problem, has no intellectual disorder, but it is difficult for her to imagine feeling of others.
自閉症の人は割と無表情だと言われるがこの感情の理解が問題なのかも知れない。
Autistic persons are rather expressionless, they say.  Understanding of feelings might be a cause of the straight face. 
でもマックスとメイソンを見ていると普通の子供のように表情豊かで
とても明るくハッピーボーイとセラピストさんに呼ばれている。
But Max and Mason have full of expressions, the same as any ordinary children.
They are also very cheerful and our therapists call them happy boys.
